Santorini was a location that was dreamed up, it seems to me. It amazes the whitewashed houses that hang in the sky, the shimmering blue-domed churches, as well as the sunsets that dissolve in the Aegean Sea, which is why it has touched the hearts of the pilgrims around the world. For me, it has always been the destination of my imagination — a paradise I long to explore.

I can say that my real-life experience on Santorini is not up to date as I have constructed my own imaginative story, which was then embroidered with tales, photos, and dreams. First of all, I want to show you the incredibly awesome way I’m living the five days of my dream vacation on this tiny Greek island.
Day 1: Arrival in Oia – A Dream Unfolds
The moment the ferry docks at Athinios port, I become lost in the thought of those so-called “extremely steep” that almost touch that the natural beauty of the sea and the cliffs is blinding any human beholder of it. After a short and curvy ascent, I am in Oia, Santorini, the most beautiful village in the world. It is universally known as the best place to encounter those breathtaking landscapes and find peace of mind.

When I look around at this beguiling underground shelter in the face of the cliff, like a caveman’s or something, I can only think of how I would want to live under those conditions. The image depicts space with no windows, the repetitive movement of lights, and a personal lookout towards the caldera where one can meditate in total tranquility. Only the quietness, which is intertwined with the screech sounds of somewhere afar, would grasp me to the fullest extent of the given paradise.

The first day there would be sparsely filled with new people opting to be present at the mere delight of seeing the most fascinating sunset, an expensive experience that crowds are fighting for. The crowds gather in the entire area to see the sun go down its path across the horizon, its golden beams make the caldera look incredible and the whitewashed structures adorable. I am guessing that some voices will be heard and people will be on high alert as nature does her usual act of attraction.

My dinner would take place in a little taverna, where I would enjoy some lamb moussaka and grilled octopus, together with a glass of the splendid homegrown Assyrtiko wine. Along with the billowing sea, getting rid of my scarf with the rated stars gradually coming out covering the naked sky, will suffice making me believe I am in the enclosed view card.
Day 2: Exploring Fira – The Heart of Santorini

On the second day, I would travel to Fira, the colorful central city of Santorini. The Motion-picture plays in my mind whereby I am passing by flowered streets and each turn introduces me to the next corner of the volcano. The walls are fully packed with flowers, including the purple and red bougainvillea; the air is full of the smell of those freshly baked that you can find in the hot oven of one of the nearby cafes. These are the options you can find while taking the tour in this beautiful place.
Passing through the fisherman’s market leaving me craving for the dishes of freshly caught fish for breakfast, I would prefer to taste Greek yogurt followed by honey, figs, and walnuts. The thing that would make the yogurt stand out would be its smooth, yet sweet taste, which is a perfect accompaniment to the day’s activities.

Fira is the town that is popular for its classically styled shops and galleries. I would wander around for hours, looking at the pieces of local artwork, jewelry, and handmade ceramics. I think that at the end of the day, I would choose something small to bring it back home with, like the final thing of my dream, even if it is just on my mind.

There I will dine at a view terrace restaurant of the teahouse. The crumbled peppers with olive oil and lemon would satisfy my craving for the fish and it was delicious at the same time. Also, the fava, which is a locally made split pea puree, would be served as a side dish. I get to enjoy the tangy lemon with the milder basil.

The day would finish with me having a nice walk along the Fira-Oia hiking path. The trail, which is 6 miles long, lets the hiker admire the most exclusive and most favorable pictures of a natural environment on the island while the cliffs nearly instantaneously end into the waves. My mental image is of the golden rays of the sun that shine down on my path and the gentle wind that wafts the delicate scent of the wild herbs.
Day 3: Santorini’s Beaches – A Contrast of Colors

The island of Santorini and its beaches are an absolutely unusual and strange experience in my life, photos of them cannot display their real beauty, the volcanic sand on the beaches is a great reminder of the volcanic eruptions that created the island. On the third day, I would embark on a tour of the island’s natural displays, beginning with Red Beach, which is located just beside the town of Akrotiri.

I picture myself taking a long rough path to reach a place right up on the top, where the cliffs of the red color are rising to the sky and then diving down into the greenish bay. But this was only one possibility. I might as well be lying down on the warm sand, just listening to the rolling waves, forgetting about everything else, enjoying my tranquility.

After a brief visit to Red Beach, I would go to Perissa, one of the gray beaches of Santorini. The high temperature coming from the black sand would make the experience uncomfortable, but I think the plunge into the clear waters will suit most of the time. I tell my friends to keep the lunch simple, maybe just a wrap with grilled meat, a couple of pieces of tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki, the whole thing wrapped in a soft pita.

The last part of the day is going to be spent at Kamari Beach, just 50 meters from the hotel, where I will be able to enjoy the water. They alikeness which is between the colors of the sky and the beach disappears at last, and the last sunray upon the beach merges into the darkness.

Mouthwatering traditional Greek music performed live by real love performers just on the seashore will be the most ideal way to finish the day off. There will be only the sound of waves and the romantic melodies from the stage that will be spreading all over.
Day 4: Sailing the Caldera – A Day at Sea
Starting from day four, I’d set off for a cruise around the caldera, one of the most famous places in Santorini. The ship would be zigzagging, sometimes getting close to secret bays and some empty isles. I surely would be filled with the excitement of the inrush of seawater on my face and of the salty smell of the ocean, which is carried by the wind.

One of the stopovers would be right by the volcano’s hot springs near Nea Kameni. Picture it in your mind that you would be gently sinking into the nice, mineral-enriched water while the soft bubbles would start to enclose you. The flow of heat and the mineral submerge would be a kind of a great thing, a memory of the volcanic heart of Santorini.

One other jetty would be onboard for lunch with fresh, just-grilled fish, green salads, and cold wine. The taste of the sea, having combined such a jaw-dropped view of the rocks and the towns,-, would make this meal forever stamped in my mind.

When the night sets in like the day wears out, the boat would be anchored near Oia. The place would be perfect for enjoying an amazing sunset. All cuddled up in a blanket, I would stand on the shore and absorb the magnificent view of the sun setting in the Aegean which is on fire with color.
Day 5: A Bittersweet Goodbye
The last day will be a day of thinking and thanks. I would rise early for the sunrise and expect the island awakening slowly in daylight. A Greek coffee and a warm spanakopita (spinach pie) would be a touching way to say goodbye to these flavors of Santorini.

Just before going, I would walk through the streets of Oia for one last time. I see myself standing in a small library at the moment, reading some Greek novels and eventually choosing one to take home as a token of this trip that had been merely a dream.

You would bid the island goodbye and the ferry would set off with a bittersweet taste in your mouth. Santorini would get smaller until the line of the horizon would swallow it, but the pictures I saw — even though they were just figments of my imagination — will last for a lifetime in my mind.
